Bristol retailers join forces to help a local shopper win national competition

Bristol camera retailer, London Camera Exchange, is joining forces with Specsavers in Broadmead to give local shoppers a hand in entering  Specsavers’  competition to find the Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2013.

Open to people of all ages who wear glasses either as an optical necessity or as a fashion accessory, this national competition is backed by former Spice Girl Melanie C. There are four age categories – 16-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+, plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. A winner from each category will win a VIP makeover and will attend the grand final in London, where the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year will be announced.

The overall winner receives a two-week all-inclusive holiday to St Lucia, courtesy of Smugglers’ Cove Resort & Spa and Virgin Holidays, plus £250 spending money. The competition will also help raise money for anti-bullying charity Kidscape, with Specsavers donating £1 for every entry.

London Camera Exchange will take photos of local people wearing glasses, which will be entered into the competition. In addition, one person will be selected at random to win a pair of designer spectacles from Specsavers Broadmead and a free  photo shoot, courtesy of London Camera Exchange.

Shoppers wanting to take part should look out for the photography team outside Marks & Spencer on Saturday 20 July from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

Melanie C said: ‘I’ve had to wear glasses or contacts since my teens and there’s never been more choice for all ages. Loving your glasses has never been cooler, all you need is a bit of confidence to make a real statement wherever you are.

‘Personally, I love the geek chic look with heavy set darker frames. There’s so much pressure out there to look good whatever your age and let’s face it we all know someone that wears glasses. These awards are to recognise specs as a fashion statement as well as a visual aid.’

Mark Walker,  store director, at Specsavers Broadmead, saysa: “It’s great to have joined forces with a quality camera shop like London Camera Exchange to take high quality photos of shoppers for this high profile, national competition. It would be great to see a local person win.”

Neil Evans, Manager, London Camera Exchange said: “We’re delighted to get involved in this event, highlighting our quality photo shoot service.”

Jo Hawkins, Retail Manager, Destination Bristol said: “The Broadmead BID is all about bringing retailers working together to increase marketing and promotional activities in Bristol Shopping Quarter.

“It is great to see this retailer event running alongside the wide range of events and activities that we are funding using BID resources.”
